Dawoon Park

Dawoon Park is a media artist and researcher born in South Korea and currently based in Germany. She studied Visual Communication Design in Seoul and New Media in Berlin. She is keen to work at the intersection of visual art, theory and practice. Her recent research focuses on the analysis of the hybrid spaces in between nature and culture and social relations of networks made up of human-nonhuman being and things. It takes the form of texts, performances, film and installations. Medium and materials are carefully selected according to the context of the philosophy and media theory on top of which her practice is grounded. Digital technology and electronic components make up a core part of her work.

Moonage Daydream

'A Brief History from Moon-age to Earth-age (feat. Mars-age)'

The long-disused International Congress Centre Berlin (ICC Berlin) had ephemerally been opened for the recent exhibition ‘The Sun Machine Is Coming Down’. Thus, ICC Berlin serves as a time machine transversing through spaces and times, providing us with opportunities to explore the transforming zeitgeists. We will attempt to analyze the exhibition and historical events to draw parallel lines to philosophies, science fiction, artworks, and scientific findings that have emerged before and after it.

The Moonage Daydream was named after David Bowie's song released in 1971. The word, Moonage, was coined by him and means moon-age — the age of moon travel apparently accelerated during the cold war. How far have we moved forward since then? Where have our eyes turned from there in dreaming of the future? What would the 'Earth-age' means yet remained halfway through thinking?

Spirit of Kitchen

'Spirit of Kitchen' is the solar energy-powered acoustic instrument based on the Korean household deity as a conceptual motif, which believes a deity or spirit protects the home, looking after the entire household. In many cases, the object of belief extends from household items, direct family members, ancestors to even all things and beings, thus, nature.

The undifferentiated world could be extended everywhere. The solar panel supplies energy to the amplifier and vibrator, resonating the metal products used in the kitchen to produce sound. Humans are shown as part of the circle rather than as operators.

Solarsound

This group was formed with the intention of continuing with research, experimentation and creation processes around the sun as a conceptual axis and main source of problematization and energy. The processes carried out so far have focused on the development of sound artifacts from electronic components and light sensors that use solar energy as the main source of operation. However, sunlight as a resource is not limited to the central power supply of the artifact. Due to the sensors that integrate the instruments, the change of intensity and the transition from light to shadow vary the tonalities of the sound, creating a landscape of the solar condition that is modified to the rhythm of the movement of the body, the sun and the hours.

Depending on the weather conditions, our group plans a sound intervention from the performance where we plan to integrate the sunlight conditions of the space and the movement of the bodies through artifacts that react to the variation and change produced between light and shadow.
